Chronic headache attributed to whiplash injury [S13.4] |
G44.841
|
Diagnostic criteria:
- Headache, no typical characteristics known, fulfilling criteria C and D
- History of whiplash (sudden and significant acceleration/deceleration movement of the neck) associated at the time with neck pain
- Headache develops within 7 days after whiplash injury
- Headache persists for >3 months after whiplash injury
Comment:
Chronic post-whiplash injury headache is often part of the post-traumatic syndrome. There is no good evidence that ongoing litigation, with settlement pending, is associated with prolongation of headache. It is important to assess patients carefully who may be malingering and/or seeking enhanced compensation.
