13.14 Ocular diabetic neuropathy [E10-E14] G44.848  

Description:

Pain around the eye and forehead associated with paresis of one or more ocular cranial nerves (usually the third cranial nerve) in a patient with diabetes mellitus.

Diagnostic criteria:

  1. Pain, in a patient with diabetes mellitus, developing over a few hours around one eye
  2. Third cranial nerve palsy, often with sparing of pupillary function, and/or paresis of the fourth and/or sixth cranial nerves
  3. Neuropathy develops within 7 days of onset of pain1
  4. Not attributed to another disorder

Note:

  1. Pain precedes signs of neuropathy by <7 days. During this time, criterion B is not fulfilled and the diagnosis is Probable ocular diabetic neuropathy.
