Alternative diagnostic criteria:

  1. At least 5 attacks fulfilling criteria B-D
  2. Headache attacks lasting 4-72 hours (untreated or unsuccessfully treated) and occurring on <15 days/month
  3. Headache has at least two of the following characteristics:
    1. unilateral location
    2. pulsating quality
    3. moderate or severe pain intensity
    4. aggravation by or causing avoidance of routine physical activity (eg, walking or climbing stairs)
  4. During headache at least two of the following:
    1. nausea
    2. vomiting
    3. photophobia
    4. phonophobia
    5. osmophobia
  5. Not attributed to another disorder

Comment:

Only criterion D is different from those in the main body of the classification. Whilst this alternative appears easier both to understand and to apply, it is not yet sufficiently validated.
