Diagnostic criteria:

  1. Headache, no typical characteristics known, fulfilling criteria C-E
  2. Presence of generalised anxiety disorder fulfilling DSM-IV criteria:
    1. excessive anxiety and worry, occurring on more days than not for at least 6 months, about a number of events or activities and which the patient finds difficult to control
    2. associated with at least three of the following:
      • restlessness or feeling keyed-up or on edge
      • being easily fatigued
      • difficulty concentrating or mind going blank
      • irritability
      • muscle tension
      • sleep disturbance
    3. not occurring exclusively during a mood disorder
    4. not due to the direct physiological effects of a medical condition or substance
  3. Headache occurs exclusively during the course of the generalised anxiety disorder
  4. Headache resolves, and does not recur, after the generalised anxiety disorder remits
  5. Headache is not attributed to another cause
